Overview

The YM2612 brought FM synthesis to the Sega Mega Drive, providing six channels of Yamaha FM sound plus one channel for digitised samples. Its metallic, distinctive timbres defined an era of gaming audio—bright leads, punchy bass, and that unmistakable Genesis sound. Composers learned to exploit its strengths while working around its limitations.
